Franco Manca

Like so many areas in London, Brixton - once tarnished with a denoting brush - has become the place for delectable, yet affordable eateries which are thriving during the post credit-crunch era. More specifically, the crop of restaurants located in Brixton Market provide the missing link between affordability and quality.

The pizzeria Franco Manca is much acclaimed. Situated at the front of the market, it promises the best sour dough pizza's in town. Unfortunately, everybody knows this. Having travelled from Tower Bridge we faced an hour long wait in a queue you cannot leave, for fear of losing your place (no bookings are taken here). On a freezing cold Saturday night, this was, quite frankly, the last place I wanted to be.

Upon finally being seated the menu consisted of 6 pizzas. We opted for the Gloucester Old Spot Ham, Mozzarella, Buffalo Ricotta and Wild Mushrooms and the Tomato, Garlic, Oregano, Capers, Olives, Anchovies & Mozzarella. The atmosphere was carefree and easy. Though perhaps too carefree, the staff were less than attentive forgetting our drink order and delivering the wrong pizzas.
Once we finally received our meal - a little worse for wear being 90 minutes later - the oven-baked dough was both crisp and fluffy. The toppings were considered, with delicate flavours and droppings of cheese, be it ricotta, mozzarella, or goats cheese - the choice is yours!

Was it worth the hour long wait? Perhaps not. However, what Franco Manca does offer is a tasty dinner for two for under £20.
